Aurora ran into the living room and skidded to a stop, her mouth rounding into a horrified O as she caught sight of Lila.

“How bad is it?” She asked.

“Just checking now.” Tom extended his hands, but sirens and the screech of tires in the driveway stopped him. Seconds later there was a pounding on the front door.

Aurora cast him an anxious glance. “Can you at least stabilize her? I'll try to stall them.”

He nodded and she hurried down the hall. He could hear her talking to the police.

“...two in the kitchen and a third on the stairs in the living room. I'm not sure who is hurt the worst.”

“Mrs. Fischer, if you don't mind my asking, what are you doing here?” The officer's voice was unfamiliar and rough with suspicion.

“I'm embarrassed to say that I followed Louis from the school. When I saw the man in his backseat, I just couldn't leave him to fend for himself. Stupid, I know. I'm sure you would have found him easily, but, well, I didn't think, I just followed him.”

“And a good thing you did, too.” The new voice was friendlier than the first, and familiar.

“Well, thank you, Officer McAdams. I appreciate your kindness, but I know better than to interfere in police business. I'm just grateful that you got here so soon.”

Tom focused his energy on Lila's head injury and managed to stop the bleeding in her brain before he heard a new set of voices asking for directions.

“She's down the hall. But there are two in the kitchen as well. Right there,” Aurora said.

“Is your husband here with you?” McAdams asked.

“Now, when would I have had time to call him?” Astonishment colored his wife's voice, and Tom grinned. With a last glance at Lila, he stood. Closing his eyes, he focused briefly and, in an instant, altered his form. Four-footed now, he scurried under the couch as Aurora and the paramedics entered the room.

“What was that?” One of the medics asked.

The other crouched next to Lila, but spared a look for his partner's pointing finger. “Probably the family dog.” He spoke the next words into the mic on his shoulder. “Adolescent female, head trauma. Breathing is rapid but steady. Pulse elevated.”

Aurora looked at the small, faun-colored dog laying under the couch and gave him a grave nod.

“We called another transport for the men, but we need to take Lila now, Mrs. Fischer.” The medic rolled in a gurney and helped his partner lift Lila onto it.

“Is she going to be all right?” Aurora asked.

“I can't say. She's stable, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of blood, but she hasn't regained consciousness.”

The EMTs rolled the gurney down the hall, and Aurora followed. As they passed the kitchen, she could see another set of emergency personnel caring for Louis French. His face was pale, and the lower half covered with an oxygen mask, but his eyes were open, staring at her in amazement.

Aurora looked at the medic checking Louis' injuries. “Will he be all right?” She asked as the EMTs worked together to lift him onto a gurney.
